International:

In Federal Politics the Liberal opposition foreign affairs spokesman Alexander Downer has claimed that the Labor foreign affairs minister, Gareth Evans, did a runner refusing to answer his questions about the human rights issues in Timor. Downer said: "I turned to make my speech (just after Evans had finished his) and he (Evans) was gone. I would have thought that we deserved better than Senator Evans standing up there, making a prepared speech and scurrying out the door." Debates are a big issue in the March Federal Election with Labor Prime Minister Paul Keating claiming that the Libs are "scared" to debate his men.

Political - Federal Election 2nd March 1996:

Not Federal, but State politics today as the by-election in Mundingburra heralds the end of the Wayne Goss era. Not bad my bold prediction that the Libs would get in. In some interesting sideline stories to the overall result (which has yet to be finalised):

Business:

The Commonwealth Bank of Australia is piloting a new product which will provide home buyers with a line of credit without establishment fees. Most Australian lenders, rightly I believe, reckon that establishment fees on loans are an easy way for banks to make money - and are expenses not faced by the rich and famous.

Sport:

The Heineken Classic in Perth on the Vines course is creating all sorts of trouble for golfer Greg Norman who, after 3 rounds, is 216 - or even par. On the other side of the coin Ian Woosnam had a blinder on the hard course with a course record 7 under 65. He now share the lead on 205 with John Daly. South African D Carter was a new name on the leader board yesterday with a great round of 66.

Social:

More than 41,000 Queenslanders will have their pensions cut under new "deeming" rules after June 30. An estimated 420 will lose their pensions altogether. This will also cost them their health, rates, car registration and other fringe benefits. Only single people with less than Au$45,000 in cash and couples with less than Au$79,000 will be eligible for full Social Security and Serrvice pensions.

Personal trivia:

For our shivering readers in the northern hemisphere take a moment to think on our plight. Below are the max and min temperatures and humidity in Brisbane and Ipswich over the last eight days. Remember, the global office is in Ipswich and its going to be another hot one today!
