SOME FACTS AND FIGURES CONCERNING THE 1995 INDYCARNIVAL:

Number of visitors:

(113,483 bytes) The total four day attendance of last year's IndyCarnival was 243,000- an increase of 23,300 on the previous year.

With extra ticket and corporate sales and the great success of the IndyCarnival concept it is anticipated that more than 250,000 people will be in attendance during the four days of the '95 event.

These figures are based on event attendance only and do not include other people who visit the Gold Coast in association with the race, but choose not to attend.

For example - The partners and children of certain race fans who attend rather head off to a theme park or other attractions than attend the race.

Economic impact:

An independent report by consultants Ernst and Young found that the 1994 IndyCarnival generated more than $23 million for the Queensland economy.

The report also identified almost $15 million in promotional benefits and the State Government received between $1.5 million and $2 million in extra revenue as a result.

While no forecast has been made for 1995, it is believed that at the current state of ticket and corporate sales and a further up-turn in the economy will mean even greater returns for the Gold Coast and for Queensland.

Employment:

The Ernst and Young independent report indicated that the 1994 event produced the equivalent of 561 full-time jobs.

Proof of generated employment can be seen in many areas, especially the construction, hospitality and security areas.

From mid-January a crew have been working on track construction. Their number will peak at 300 a couple of weeks before the event.

Supporting security staff will top 400 during the IndyCarnival week.

Television:

(107,739 bytes) It is estimated that 6.3 million people watched a two-hour telecast of last year's event through the US ABC Network alone.

These figures obviously do not include the other 105 countries who had access to the coverage of the event.

At its peak 850,000 Australian households were tuned into the 1994 Channel Nine telecast.

This year's race will again be televised by the Channel Nine network for a total time of 11.5 hours.

IndyCar Australia will be shown through 128 countries this year, which is an increase of 22 countries from 1994.

This year's US coverage will be shown on network television on Sunday afternoon and then repeated the following day on cable.

Volunteers:

One of the most important aspects of the Indy Carnival is the volunteer program.

There are approximately 500 on-track volunteers who are involved with the actual running of the race and about 780 other volunteers who work as officials in such capacities as gate and grandstand attendants, information booth operators and corporate hosts and hostesses.

The volunteer program is especially beneficial for unemployed people who are looking to create some motivation in their lives. The volunteer program involves training sessions which teach grooming, presentation and communication skills which are so important when seeking a place in the workforce.
