By taking pole for today's IndyCar Australia race, Michael Andretti has won a $10 000 bonus from Marlboro as part of the Marlboro Pole Award Program, if Andretti goes on to win today's race he wins an additional $30 000.
This is Andretti's second consecutive pole of the 1995 PPG IndyCar World Series season after capturing the pole at the season-opening Marlboro Grand Prix of Miami.
The Marlboro Pole Award is comprised of a series-wide pole award and an additional bonus of $15 000 if the pole winner wins the race. If the pole winner does not win the race, an additional $15 000 is added to the pool of the next race. The prize money continues to grow until somebody takes out the whole pool.
Last year, Marlboro Team Penske driver Al Unser Jr led the series in Marlboro Pole Award bonus money by taking home $240 000 in prize money for his three 'wins from the pole' in Portland, Cleveland and Mid-Ohio.
