Speaks fluent Dutch and German as well as English. Began working with race cars as a youngster in his father's garage. Attended driving school in Zandvoort, The Netherlands (1972). Maintains an interest in music, shows, business and art. Fitness enthusiast. Of his move to the United States says "If I hadn't come to North America, I don't know what I would be doing now, most likely building and repairing race cars for other drivers." He and his wife Mieke, are the parents of a daughter Maida (14th June 1988) son Arie Jr (18th September 1981) and twin boys Luca and Alec (23rd July 1993). Family home is Rosmalen, The Netherlands. Closed Scottsdale art gallery and opened the Arie Luyendyk Motorsports Gallery in Indianapolis' Union Station shopping mall in 1992. Gallery features selection of original art, limited edition prints, posters and memorabilia items covering the history of the sport. Has been a national spokesperson for the Centre for Missing and Exploited Children since 1990. Named by People Magazine one of the "50 Most Beautiful People in the World 1992."
