Racing Career:
One of IndyCar Racing's most recogniseable personalities. First race was a Formula Ford event in England during 1972. Stayed overseas to compete in Formula Three in 1976.
1972 - Stayed overseas to compete in Formula Three
until 1976.
1974 - Second in British Formula Two championship.
Fourth in European Formula Three.
1975 - Scored five wins, four poles in Formula Three.
1976 - Moved to Formula Two.
1977 - Started endurance racing.
1978 - Competed in Formula Atlantic racing in New
Zealand (fourth in points) and the US (eighth).
1980 - Finished sixth in Can-Am points.
1981 - Took fouth in Can-Am points standing inclusing
a win at Las Vegas. Also raced in Formula Atlantic.
1982 - Moved up to third in Can-Am points again
winning at Caesar's Palace. Formula Atlantic and Can-Am
racing backed by Garvin Brown and Paul Newman. Made PPG Cup
racing debut with third at Atlanta. Qualified thirteenth for
Indianapolis 500 finishing fourteenth after hitting turn
four wall.
1983 - Spent entire season with Tyrrell-Ford Formula
One Team, taking fifth at Monaco in his best finish.
1984 - Returned to run full PPG Cup schedule for
Domino's Pizza/Team Shierson. Won first event at Cleveland,
as well as Pocono 500 and Montreal race. Nine Top Ten
finishes secured fourth place in standings.
1985 - Joined Penske Racing team. Captured Indy 500
and Miami events. Indianapolis win came despite spin in
front of Mario Andretti on lap 120. Qualified for pole
position at Portland and Elkhart Lake. Finished fourth in
PPG points with eight Top Five finishes.
1986 - Secured third in PPG points with back-to-back
wins at Meadowlands and Cleveland. Won pole positions at
Long Beach and Cleveland.
1987 - Failed to post win or pole for first time
since rookie season (1982). Six Top Five finishes, including
two seconds. Finished second in Marlboro Challenge. Ninth in
PPG point standings.
1988 - Won first PPG IndyCar World Series title. Won
four events - Portland, Michigan 500, Nazareth and Laguna
Seca and nine pole positions. Scored eleven Top Five
finishes in fifteen races. Started Indy in middle of all-
Penske front row next to pole sitter Rick Mears and Al
Unser.
1989 - Broke arm at Indianapolis, but still qualified
twenty sixth and raced before axle problem ended day in
twenty eighth position. Went on to win two events (Pocono
500 and Road America) plus one pole position after skipping
road courses at Portland and Cleveland. Finished seventh in
points. Raced in IROC, winning at Nazareth.
1990 - Scored four poles and two wins at Cleveland
and Laguna Seca. part of a three car Penske Racing effort
with team mates Rick Meares and Emerson Fittipaldi. Crashed
at Indianapolis after qualifying ninth. Ended six-year
association with Penske win at final event at Laguna Seca.
Finished sixth overall in points.
1991 - Joined Miller Genuine Draft-sponsored Patrick
Racing/Alfa Romeo team scoring best finish in three years
for Italian engine maufacturer. Fourth place at Australian
season opener. Qualified fourth at Milwaukee oval wirth best
start of season.
1992 - Finished seventh in points after scoring one
win at Long Beach for owner Rick Galles. Finished five races
in Top Five and eleven in the Top Ten. Other podium finish
was in Toronto where he finished third.
1993 - Twelfth in PPG Cup championship driving for
Rick Galles. Detroit was only win of the season. Drove
Molson sponsored car for podium finish at Molson Indy
Toronto. Also secured points at Long Beach and Vancouver.
Missed Michigan due to illness. Sullivan and team mate Al
Unser Jr were only non-Penske or Newman-Haas drivers to win
races in 1993.
1994 - Ended up without an IndyCar ride when Galles
Racing international decided to concentrate its efforts on
Adrian Fernandez. Competed in the inaugural at Brickyard
400. Competed in the International Race of Champions. Tested
for the PacWest Racing Group at Mid-Ohio then went on to
announce he would drive for the team full-time in 1995.
