GLOBE (Global On-line Business Enterprises) International will provide a comprehensive directory of web pages (electronic brochures) for each country and state participating.
GLOBE was developed by Ipswich-based Global Web Builders, which provides links to more than 5,000 Australian Web pages on the Internet.
Similar links are being set up in New Zealand, Israel, Russia, South Africa, Holland, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, India and Singapore and three states of the US.
Users will be able to connect to GLOBE and click on the map of the world to call up a directory of web pages in the participating country of their choice.
They will then be able to visit any of the web pages.
The service was launched on Friday with Australia and New Zealand on-line.
The other countries are expected to come on-line by the end of the year.
GLOBE director, Scott Balson, said that less than 12 months ago it was estimated that there were about 40,000 web pages on the Internet.
Now there were about 10 million private, business and government web pages.
This explosion of information had been brought about by the refinement of web browsers (software used for accessing web pages) he said.
Web pages can contain a variety of information in many different forms including text, graphics, video clips and sound clips.
