Lara is situated just off the Princes Highway, approx. 16 km. from Geelong and 60 km. from Melbourne. It is part of the City of Greater Geelong which is the second largest city in Victoria, Australia. Lara has a population of approx. 7,000. The landscape around Lara is relatively flat but to the north is the You Yangs, with Flinders Peak rising to 364 metres. Long time residents of Lara, when they have been on holidays, often remark, that when they see the You Yangs then they know that they are home. Flinders Peak takes its name from an early explorer, Matthew Flinders. He climbed the peak to view the surrounding land. Hovell Creek which flows through the town was also named after an early explorer who transited the area with his companion Hume.
