Folk Dance Canberra was incorporated in 1994, but began with International Folk Dance classes started by Christine and Jim Battisson in 1991. They had completed their teacher training course and wished to spread their love of International Folk Dancing and practise their teaching skills. When they had four classes, the decision was made to share the load by forming an inaugural committee to establish Folk Dance Canberra Inc.

Australian-born artist Martin Russell is a sculptor of vision and clear direction who combines a sense of purpose with personal pleasure in attaining his goals. Born on a rural property in central Victoria, Russell studied at Chisolm and the Prahan College of Arts, gaining degrees in industrial design, painting and design, and ceramics.
